Our
After-school tutoring programs
are maintaining an enrollment
of over 100 students hearing the gospel and receiving academic
enrichment at 4 sites all over the city.
Our Ash Street 5 day-a-week
afternoon program had an enrollment of over 80 students! Our
emphasis on tracking scores on the STAR Reader software
testing and report card grades was very encouraging.
74 percent of students tested at
least twice (most were tested 4 times)
increased their Grade Equivalent scores. Evaluations of
Report card grades were even more encouraging with 81% achieving
a “C” or above in Reading! Forty (40%) increased their grades
from the beginning of the year! In Math, 85% achieved a “C” or
above with 20% increasing their grades. Of those whose grades
decreased in Reading and Math, less than ½ had grade averages
below a “C.”
NCC’s
Hearts for Arts program had
another successful year with an enrollment of 60 students
gaining performance arts skills through two weeks of acting,
dance, stage production and speech instruction classes to teens
from the 6th – 12th grades at the Belhaven
College Center for the Arts. The Junior League of Jackson
sponsored this event for this hard to reach age group of
teenagers.
Fifteen (15)
specially selected students performed with the Living Water
Dance Company in two productions of the “Marionette
and the Music Box,” a creative performance in the
Historic Fondren Arts District along with local musicians, “Wooden
Finger” and “El Obo.”
The
Summer Super Stars for Christ
5-week program reached over
150 students. Although we only have the children for five
weeks, forty (40) percent of the students in the programs who we
were able to test during the program increased their STAR Reader
Grade Equivalent scores.
Twenty-five (25) students made a
profession of faith during the Summer Super Stars for
Christ program.
Over
200 individuals and companies contributed financial or
“in-kind” goods
Over
250 volunteers from 4 states and 5 denominations shared the
love of Christ through their involvement with NCC
Over
500 families received Christmas food boxes to enable
them to serve a hearty Christmas dinner this holiday season Local families will have access to NCC’s Adopt-a-Family program
and Christmas Toy room.
The Neighborhood
Christian Center held its first annual
“Pickin’ and Paddlin’ Outdoor Festival”
at Mayes Lake in
April attracting over 500 participants. This event, benefiting
the services NCC provides to children, featured Bluegrass Bands
from all over the state of Mississippi, Canoe and kayak races, a
5K Run, Barbeque lunch and children’s activities.
