Our Partners

Transformation Jackson:
The Georgetown community is part of “Ground Zero” an area identified by Transformation Jackson, a faith based community development movement. “Ground Zero” has been identified as the area from Ellis Avenue to Bailey Avenue and from Woodrow Wilson Drive to US Highway 80. Transformation Jackson is a group recently formed by church and community leaders in Jackson as a way to focus their interests on a particular part of the city in order to make effective change. Transformation Jackson partners with volunteers and financial contributors from all over Metro area and works with local nonprofits to meet their needs. As a founding member of Transformation Jackson, NCC’s Executive Director, James Turner continues to build on equipping others in the city Jackson with the opportunities to serve.

Mission Mississippi:
Our partnership with Mission Mississippi is based on our belief in the body of Christ and the racial redemption that is possible through His grace. NCC works with Mission Mississippi’s to support its goal: “To encourage and demonstrate unity in the Body of Christ across racial and denominational lines so that communities throughout Mississippi can better understand the gospel message.” NCC believes that it is important to partner with organizations such as Mission Mississippi for the purpose of unity in the body of Christ.

Our History

Miss Defore, NCC's Development Director, is our newest staff member. She has worked in the field of graphic design, marketing and development for over 35 years in a variety of venues.

She has a B.A. in Art and Sociology from the University of Mississippi, and a M.S. in Art from Mississippi College. She has also taken a number of seminary courses at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss. After graduating from college, she served for three years as a Campus Crusade for Christ staff member in Montana, Utah and California.

The majority of her development experience has been "hands on" in raising financial support for her own mission endeavors, and for other full-time missionaries.

She served as a Supervisor of Advertising at Mississippi Valley Gas Company, working with a team of marketing professionals.

She has had the opportunity to be involved with a number of cross-cultural ministries, both here and abroad. She served as a volunteer prision chaplain at the women's prison facility in Pearl, Miss., and as a volunteer with Campus Crusade for Christ's Jesus Film Ministry in Bangalore, India. She is active in the Internationals Ministry at her home church, First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, where she also served on the Missions Committee for a number of years.
The Neighborhood Christian Center is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization formed by a group of Jackson residents in 1991. NCC was officially incorporated in 1991 and received its nonprofit status in June, 1992. The original board members were members of the Mission to Jackson Committee from First Presbyterian Church and leadership & oversight was provided by JoeAnn and Monroe Ballard, founders of the Neighborhood Christian Center in Memphis. The first tutoring sites were on North State Street, at 2nd Temple Christ Holiness USA on Lily Street, and at Camp Pioneer in Rankin County.  In 1993, NCC moved its office to the Primos building on Fortification Street and began partnering with First Presbyterian Church to serve individuals & families in need in the neighborhood. After the Primos building caught fire, the Nazarene Church offered their church building on Ash Street to NCC to use for its new headquarters. The new Ash Street location immediately became a Thursday afternoon tutoring site for neighborhood children.

In 1995, Elder James E. Turner, Sr. joined the NCC staff as NCC’s Executive Director. Under his leadership, (95-present) NCC has continued its partnership with local churches and was able to increase its after-school tutoring program to include multiple sites around Jackson and has expanded to include a variety of summer programs to over 200 students. In addition to our educational programs to children, NCC has also increased its Christmas mercy ministry program to annually provide over 750 boxes of food to families in need in its community.

Our Community
The Georgetown/Mid-City community that surrounds the Neighborhood Christian Center is located in the west central quadrant of Jackson, Mississippi in close proximity to downtown. It is bordered by: Woodrow Wilson to the North, Fortification Street to the South, Mill Street/Railroad tracks to the east and Town Creek tributary on the west.

The Georgetown/Mid-city community is made up of: 96.3% Black/African-American and the typical income level falls between the ranges of: $15,000-$23,000 per year.

Over the past 40 years, the Georgetown neighborhood has struggled both economically and socially as its reputation has changed from a historically prominent neighborhood known for its education and opportunities to a neighborhood that is often known for its crime, drug use and poverty. We believe that Georgetown, just like any other neighborhood deserves the right to a peaceful environment. Children shouldn’t be afraid to walk down their own streets, community members shouldn’t have to live in fear of someone using violence against them or breaking into their homes. We believe in coming alongside our community to give the residents of Georgetown the opportunities to restore and take pride in their neighborhood. Because of our belief in the redemptive power of Jesus Christ, we can have hope as we work with the people of Georgetown to reclaim their own community.
